Free Play: We start the day with free play, during which children can move freely between activities throughout the room such as the block area, dramatic play area, art and science tables, sensory table, puzzles and games, play dough, etc. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia idea of invitations to play, new materials are introduced throughout the room on a regular basis to encourage creativity and exploration.
Sharing Time: Sharing time is a relaxed discussion time focused on bonding and building background knowledge. It is a time to build on the children's growing curiosity about the world and people around them and to show that everyone's voice is important.
One of the biggest difference-makers that researchers have been able to point to in order to explain the gap between advantaged and disadvantaged children entering school comes down to the quantity and quality of conversations they have with adults, and this gap is virtually uncloseable. The conversations matter!
Table Time and Small Group: During this block of time, children choose between a variety of playful, individual activities that reinforce early literacy, pre-writing, and math skills. They also rotate for small group time during which we play games and do activities geared towards their level and interests.
Outside Play: This is a time for kids to be wild and free in the beauty of nature. We will also occasionally incorporate group activities like picking apples, playing parachute games, or going for a walk.
Large group activity: This may take many forms: art, science experiments, cooking, games, celebrating birthdays, etc. This is a fun time to bond as a group.
Story time: This is one of my favorite parts of the day. Stories and songs are a great way to connect with kids, build background knowledge, grow phonological awareness and other early literacy skills, and have fun! I love to incorporate musical instruments, puppets, flannel boards, etc. to engage and excite the kids.
